abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R 1 is 5-18C alkyl: R 2 is 4-15C alkyl; X is O group of formula II, formula III or single bond; * is center of optical activity). n EXAMPLE: 4-(1-Methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl-4'-n-nonanoyloxybiphenyl-4- carboxylate. n USE: Useful as a display element or an electrooptical element utilizing the response to electric field. It exhibits three stable states consisting of molecular orientation in the absence of electric field, molecular orientation in an electric field and molecular orientation different from both of the above states. n PREPARATION: The objective compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a 4-benzyloxybenzoic acid compound with an optically active 2-alkanol, subjecting the product to hydrogenative decomposition to obtain a 4- hydroxybenzoic acid 1-methylalkyl ester and reacting the product with a 4'- alkanoyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid in the presence of dicyclohexyl carbodiimide. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
