abstract | PURPOSE: To easily obtain a halogenated spiropyran photochromic material formable by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique into thin film by introducing first a long-chain alkyl and then a halogen group in the manufacture of a halogenated spiropyran. n CONSTITUTION: A halogenating agent is directly reacted with a photochromic material of formula I to synthesize a photochromic material of formula II. In formulas I and II, R is alkyl, preferably a 6-32C hydrocarbon group; R 1 and R 2 are each ketoalkyl, alkoxy, nitro, halogen or alkanoyloxymethyl; Y is fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, and 1 to 4 of them substitute at arbitrary positions of an indoline ring.
