titleOfInvention Conversion method of actinoid compound into metallic fuel
abstract PURPOSE: To enable conversion of an actinoid compound into a metal to be contaminated little, in a short time, by melting and reducing the compound by using a reductive plasma. n CONSTITUTION: A couple of plasma torches 3 and 4 are provided above a crucible 2 of a plasma melting furnace 1, while a hopper 5 supplying an actinoid compound (stock) 6 of a uranium oxide, a plutonium oxide or the like to a plasma arc formed by the torches is provided, and a melting operation is conducted in vacuum or an inactive gas. In other words, the stock 6 in the form of a powdered body is supplied in a prescribed amount from the hopper 5 into the crucible 2 and melted and reduced by the plasma arc, and oxygen is removed as water or a carbon monoxide outside the melting furnace 1. After the melting and reduction by the plasma are performed, a metallic fuel 7 is poured into a mold 8 in the melting furnace 1, fixed by casting and thereafter refined by fused-salt electrolytic refining or the like. Since the actinoid compound is reduced in a short time ad oxygen is removed as water or the carbon monoxide according to this method of convession, a metal to be contaminated little is obtained in a short time and a radioactive waste is also lessened. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
