abstract PURPOSE: To provide a ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal compound having three new states and useful for a display element, an electro-optic element, etc., by forming a specified compound having a naphthalene skeleton. n CONSTITUTION: A ferroelectric liquid crystal compound which comprises a compound of formula I wherein R 1 is 3-18C alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkanoyl or alkanoyloxy; R 2 is 3-18C alkyl; X is -COO-, -OCO-, -CH 2 O- or -OCH 2 -; Y is -COO- or -CH 2 O-; A and B are each 1,4-phenylene of formula II, 4,4'-biphenylene of any one of formulas III to V, or 2,6-naphthylene of formula VI, provided that at least one of A and B is 2,6-naphthylene (l is F, Cl, CN or NO 2 ); R 3 is C 2 F 5 , CF 3 , CHF 2 , CH 2 F or CH 3 ; * is an optically active group, e.g. 4-(1,1,1-trifluoro-2-octyloxycarbonyl)naphthyl 4'-decyloxy-2- fluorobiphenyl-4-carboxylate. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
