titleOfInvention Instrument for measuring quantity of oxygen consumed by respiratory muscle
abstract PURPOSE: To enable a function of respiratory muscles to be examined easily by connecting one end of a respiratory circuit, whose inner volume can be made to change little by little, to a subject's respiratory tract and also the other end to a circulation circuit and by installing a CO 2 removal equipment and an airometer in the circulation circuit. n CONSTITUTION: Oxygen gas is filled in a circulation circuit 4, including a soda lime box 16 and an airometer 17, and a respiratory circuit 1, and a bellows pipe 2 is fully contracted beforehand. While a subject is made to hold a mouthpiece between his teeth and to breathe in this condition, a motor 13 is driven at a preset speed and a volume in the respiratory circuit 1 is increased little by little by gradually extending the bellow tube 2. A variation of gas quantity in the circulation circuit 4 during this period is measured with the airometer 17. A measured wavarform contains three gas quantity variations, that is to say, a difference between measured waveform 28, a functional residual gas volume, and a base line 27 corresponds to CO 2 gas quantity absorbed and removed by the soda lime box 16, i.e., O 2 gas quantity consumed by respiration, and O 2 consumption quantity is found out by expressing the former as a difference between every 1 min. A ventilation quantity is also found out by an amplitude of the measured waveform 28, i.e. a width between its top and bottom. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
