abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a 4-acyloxyazetidin-2-one in a high yield useful for preparing carbapenems by contacting a combined oxidizing agent comprising bromine and sodium chlorite with a a specific furanyl compound at low temperature. n CONSTITUTION: A combined oxidizing agent comprising bromine and a sufficient amount of sodium chlorite to form 4-hydroxy-lactoneazetidin-2-one is contacted with a 4-furanyl compound of the formula (wherein R 1 , R 2 are each H, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C fluoroalkyl, α-carbon substituted 1-10C alkyl or α-carbon substituted 1-10C fluoroalkyl; R 3 is H or 1-10C alkyl; R 4 is H or a protective group of N; X, Y and Z are each H, a halogen, 1-10C alkyl, 6C or 10C aryl, 1-10C alkoxy, or 6C or 10C aryloxy) at 0-20°C to obtain a desired compound. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
