PURPOSE: To obtain an antiviral agent effective against AIDS virus, etc., having activity against retrovirus and low toxicity, comprising 5 ethyl-1-[(2- hydroxyethoxy)methyl]-6-phenylthiouracil, etc., as an active ingredient. n CONSTITUTION: An antiviral agent comprising 5-ethyl-1-[(2-hydroxyethoxy) methyl]-6-phenylthiouracil shown by formula I or 1-[(2-hydroxyethoxy)methyl]-6- phenylthio-5-isopropyluracil shown by formula II as an active ingredient. The compound can be administered for prevention and treatment of infection with retrovirus, etc., by any route such as oral administration, administration per rectum, parenteral administration or local administration.
