abstract PURPOSE: To facilitate the formation of an alloy target and to obtain the magneto-optical recording medium which is suitable for mass production and has a high sensitivity and high C/N by forming a metal reflecting layer of an AlAu alloy formed by incorporating Au at 0.05 to 5.0at.% into Al. n CONSTITUTION: The AlAu alloy film added with the Au having the thermal conductivity higher than the thermal conductivity of the Al exhibits a low thermal conductivity. The diffraction peak of the face-centered cubic lattice Al of the AlAu film annihilates and the diffraction peak occurring in interplanar spacings 3.49Å and 2.14Å is freshly observed and an AlAu alloy intermetallic compd. is formed. This AlAu intermetallic compd. contributes to the lowering of the thermal conductivity. The recording sensitivity is im proved by lowering the thermal conductivity. The effect of lowering the thermal conductivity is small if the amt. of the Au to be added is smaller than 0.05at.%. Conversely, the lowering of the reflectivity of the AlAu alloy film increases when the amt. is larger than 5.0at.%.
