abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound of high quality suitable for an intermediate for synthesis of N-vinyl formamide used for synthesis of a high molecular weight polymer by using N-(α-hydroxyethyl)formamide as the raw material, carrying out dehydration condensation between N-(α-hydroxyethyl)formamide and formamide in the presence of an acid catalyst and subsequently hydrolyzing the resultant compound. n CONSTITUTION: N-(α-hydroxyethyl)formamide is used as the raw material and dehydration condensation between the above mentioned compound and formamide is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst (preferably sulfuric acid, sulfamic acid, etc.) at 0-120°C to obtain the objective compound. In addition, the dehydration condensation reaction smoothly proceeds without doing further actions in case of using formamide in a remarkably excess amount based on the above mentioned raw material. In case the amount of formamide used is reduced, water produced in the reaction is preferably removed to the outside of the reaction system in order to efficiently proceed the reaction. The amount of formamide used is selected within a range of 1-30 time moles based on the raw material.
