titleOfInvention Production of 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid
abstract PURPOSE:To obtain 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid important as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals in high yield by oxidizing inexpensive 2-hydroxy-4- phenylbutyric acid with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of platinum and bismuth. CONSTITUTION:The objective 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid can be produced by oxidizing a 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid (D-isomer, L-isomer or racemic compound can be used) with oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas (preferably in a mixture of water and an organic solvent at pH5-7) in the presence of platinum and bismuth. The 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid used as a starting raw material can be produced by a relatively simple process and is available at a low cost. The process can be carried out under mild condition in high yield and is an industrially practicable process. The 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid is useful as an intermediate for e.g. an ACE inhibitor (a hypotensor).
