abstract NEW MATERIAL:A benzimidazole of formula I (R 1 and R 2 are mutually independently H or lower alkyl). n EXAMPLE: 2-(2-Methylaminobenzylsulfinyl)benzimidazole. n USE: Useful as an antiulcer agent. The compound exhibits a gastric acid secretion- inhibiting action based on the excellent H + +K + ATPase-inhibiting action thereof. n PREPARATION: A 2-mercaptoimidazole of formula II is subjected to a reaction with a 2-aminobenzyl compound of formula III (X is a reactive group) preferably in the presence of an alkaline agent such as sodium hydroxide in a solvent such as toluene at the room temperature to the refluxing temperature of the solution to prepare a compound of formula VI. The compound of the formula VI is oxidized with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide in a solvent such as chloroform at -30°C to 50°C to provide the compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
