abstract PURPOSE: To improve the abrasion resistance by forming a chromium layer at least either at a hammer pin or at a pin hole part of a printing hammer which slides in friction with the hammer pin, and forming a setting layer of a solid solution of nitrogen or carbon and chromium or of a compound of nitrogen or carbon and chromium. n CONSTITUTION: A chromium layer is formed at least either at a hammer pin 3 holding a printing hammer 4 or at a pin hole part 2 of the printing hammer 4. The pin hole part 2 slides in friction with the hammer pin 3. At the same time, a setting layer is formed of a solid solution or compound of nitrogen and chromium. The setting layer is preferable to have 1,600 or more Vickers hardness and 3μm or more thickness. Any thickness and hardness of the layer can be selected as desired according to the forming conditions. In the case of sputtering, the film becomes uniform because of the utilization of the glow discharge in plasma. The film becomes harder when the containing amount of nitrogen or carbon in chromium is increased. The quantity of gas in the ambience and the film forming conditions are adjusted in order to obtain a desired hardness of the film.
