abstract PURPOSE: To improve S/N and durability by forming a magnetic layer formed by using cobalt-deposited iron oxide and iron carbide which are specified in BET specific surface area and coercive force as magnetic powder and a resin having separately specified hydrophilic groups as a binder on a nonmagnetic base. n CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium is constituted by providing the magnetic layer in which the magnetic powder is bonded by the binder on the nonmagnetic base. The cobalt-deposited iron oxide and iron carbide having ≥40m 2 /g BET specific surface area and ≥750Oe coercive force are used for the magnetic powder and the resin having at least one kind of the hydrophilic groups among SO 3 M, SO 4 M, PO 4 M 2 , and N + R 1 R 2 R 3 X - is used for the binder. In the formula, M denotes hydrogen, alkaline metal or ammonium; R 1 , R 2 , R 3 respectively denote an org. salt and X denotes anion.
