abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 5,7-diphenyl-4,6-diazaindane derivative expressed by formula I (R 1 is halogen at the o- or m-position, lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, lower alkoxyl, lower alkylthio, lower haloalkoxyl or lower haloalkylthio; R 2 is H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, lower alkoxyl or lower haloalkoxyl; R 3 and R 4 are H or lower alkyl; X is methylene, O or S). n EXAMPLE: 7-(3-Trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-phenyl-4,6-diazaindane. n USE: Useful as a herbicide and capable of exhibiting excellent selectivity among crops and weeds. n PREPARATION: A diketone derivative expressed by formula II is reacted with a benzamidine derivative expressed by formula III or, as an alternative method, a compound expressed by formula IV (R 5 is H, etc.; Y is O, etc.) is heated to afford the compound expressed by formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
