titleOfInvention Preparation of alkanesulfonic acid by oxidation of alkanethiol and dialkyldisulfide
abstract PURPOSE: To effectively obtain alkane sulfonic acid by oxidizing alkanethiol and/or dialkyldisulfide in the presence of the water, and a catalyst amount of lower dialkylsulfoxide and hydrogen halide, with an oxygen-containing gas. n CONSTITUTION: (a) C 1-18 alkanethiol and/or (b) C 2-24 dialkyldisulfide, and (c) an oxygen-containing gas (for example, the air, or a mixture of oxygen and the air or an inert gas), are brought into contact with each other in the presence of (d) a large excess of the water (ordinary more than 4 mol per 1 mol of (a), and more than 6 mol per 1 mol of (b), (e) a catalyst amount of lower dialkylsulfoxide, and (f) a catalyst amount of hydrogen halide, preferably hydrogen bromide and/or hydrogen iodide, preferably at 90-150°C, to effectively prepare alkali sulfonic acid, without consuming the expensive (e) in excess, and without producing a by-product, particularly a large mount of dialkylsulfide which induces the environmental problems for its strong smell. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
