PURPOSE: To obtain an external agent for cosmetic, etc., having high safety and excellent melanin-suppressing effect by compounding 5-oxymaltol or 3- oxykojic acid to a base. n CONSTITUTION: The objective external agent is produced by compounding 5- oxymaltol of formula I or 3-oxykojic acid of formula II as active component to a base for external agent.
