titleOfInvention Preparation of salicylic acid derivative
abstract PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound useful as a developer for pressure- sensitive recording materials in high yield and quality by a simple operation comprising one step reaction by reacting salicylic acid with a styrenic compound in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid or inorganic acid as a catalyst in an aliphatic carboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:Salicylic acid is reacted with a styrenic compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or methyl) (e.g., styrene or alpha-methylstyrene) in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid or inorganic acid (especially preferably an alkane sulfonic acid, phosphoric acid or sulfuric acid) in an aliphatic carboxylic acid (especially preferably formic acid, acetic acid or propionic acid) to provide a salicylic acid derivative of formula II [e.g., 3,5-bis(alpha-methylbenzyl) salicylic acid]. The method permits to reduce the cost of the objective compound and to obtain a salicylic acid derivative mixture substantially free from by-products.
