PURPOSE: To obtain a magnesium phenate useful as detergents for lubricating oil advantageously without using an inorganic halogenation catalyst, by reacting a magnesium compound with phenol, etc., in the presence of a specified solvent and a specified promoter. n CONSTITUTION: (a) A magnesium compound, especially MgO and (b) phenol, methylene bisphenol, or phenol sulfide (especially the reaction product of 4-nonyl phenol with SCl 2 ) are reacted in the presence of (c) a solvent containing an organic compound having at least one alcoholic OH group, especially methanol or a compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl; n is an integer of 1-10) and (d) a promoter selected from a ketone, diketone, aldehyde, or carboxylic acid, especially a compound of formula II (R 1 is alkyl) without adding a significant amount of an inorganic halogen compound to obtain a mixture in which the content of the compound is below 0.2 wt.%, particularly less than 0.1 wt.% of magnesium phenate by a simple process. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
