abstract PURPOSE: To exactly recognize the radiation field by comparing a characteristic value and a prescribed value, and deciding whether an outline candidate point is an outline point or an erroneously detected point in accordance with whether the characteristic value is larger or smaller than the prescribed value. n CONSTITUTION: On a cumulative phosphor sheet 11, an object image 3 in which a breast part of the human body is an object is cumulative phosphor sheet is selected as a prescribed point in the radiation field 2, a differential operation is performed to pre-read image data Sp corresponding to each picture element on each segment along each of plural segments 5 extended radially from this center C, and a point where a value of the pre-read image data Sp drops suddenly is derived as an outline candidate point. For instance, a value of the pre-read image data Sp of a direct radiant ray part 5 by which the cumulative phosphor sheet 11 is irradiated directly by radiant ray, except the object image 3 in the radiation field 2 is the highest, and in an outline of the radiation field 2, the value of the pre-read image data Sp drops suddenly.
