abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium suitable for overwriting by covering the surface of the magneto-optical recording medium facing to a magnetic head with a material having high hardness and environmental resistance. CONSTITUTION:In the magneto-optical recording medium in which recording, reproducing and erasing is performed by irradiation of light, the uppermost layer facing to the magnetic head for recording and erasing is covered with a protective layer 4b selected from a group including carbon, amorphous silicon (a-Si) and boron nitride of hexagonal zincblende structure (c-BN). Namely, the film of carbon, a-Si or C-BN has excellent durability against sliding on head crashing and can be used satisfactorily as a protective film with environmental resistance. Thereby, the obtained magneto-optical recording medium can be used for long period under usual conditions and overwritten by magnetic modification method.
