NEW MATERIAL: A compound of the formula [wherein one of R 1 and R 2 is -SR (wherein R is a 15C alkyl), and the other is a 15C alkyl or the like; A 1 and A 4 are each 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or the like; Z 1 and Z 2 are each -CH 2 CH 2 -, -CH 2 O- or the like; m and n are each 0 or 1; and A 2 and A 3 are each 1,4-phenylene]. n EXAMPLE: 4-Butylthio-4'-propyltolan. n USE: A liquid crystal phase component, especially suitable for use in a mixture for ECB(electrically controlled birefringency) effect. n PREPARATION: The corresponding stilbene is brominated, and the product is dehalogenated to obtain a compound of the formula. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
