abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition, containing a substituted cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a specific polymer and excellent in dispersion stability and sizing effects. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition containing (A) a substituted cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride expressed by the formula (R is ≥5C alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or aralkenyl; n is 2-3) (e.g., hexadecylsuccinic anhydride) and (B) a polymer obtained by (co)polymerizing a vinylic monomer (preferably acrylamide or further a cationic vinyl monomer and/or anionic vinyl monomer) in the presence of a 6-22C alkyl mercaptan (preferably n-octyl or n-dodecyl mercaptan).
