abstract PURPOSE: To economically obtain the title compound which is a raw material in synthesizing a homoserin of intermediate raw material for threonine which is one essential amino acid according to Strecker method in high yield by reacting acrolein with an carboxylic acid in the presence of a specific catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Acrolein is reacted with a carboxylic acid using chloride or bromide of calcium as a catalyst, as necessary in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor such as hydroquinone, preferably in a solvent such as dimethylsulfoxide under an inert gas atmosphere at -80-150°C, preferably -20-90°C to provide the aimed compound. Furthermore, the above-mentioned catalyst is preferably used in form of anhydride and used amount thereof is 0.1-70wt.%, preferably 1-30wt.% based on the reaction solution.
