titleOfInvention Preparation of aryloxychloromethanes
abstract PURPOSE: To prepare aryloxychloromethanes from easily available starting materials without a particular expense concerning industrial safety by free radical-initiated chlorination of not completely chlorinated aryloxychloromethanes. n CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [wherein Ar 1 is a 6-10C aryl which may be substituted; R 1 is H or Cl; R 2 is Ar 2 -O- (wherein Ar 2 has the same meaning as Ar 1 ); the Ar 1 O group may be connected with R 2 and carbon atoms intervening them to represent the group of formula II] is subjected to free radical-initiated chlorination to give an aryloxychloromethane. Free radicals can be initiated during chlorination by such methods, for example, as addition of 0.0001-0.5 mole of azo-bis-isobutyronitrile per mole of an aryloxymethane, radiation with an ultraviolet lamp, etc. Employment of elementary chlorine or sulfuryl chloride as a chlorinating agent necessitates no particular expense as all the by-products brought about fly away in a gaseous state. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
