titleOfInvention Production of saturated aliphatic or acicyclic polyhydric alcohol
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by catalytic hydrogenolysis of an esterified substance of a monohydric alcohol prepared from a ≥6C branched alkane and a saturated aliphatic or alicyclic polyfunctional carboxylic acid or esterified substance of a hydroxycarboxylic acid. n CONSTITUTION: An ester of a saturated aliphatic or alicyclic polyfunctional carboxylic acid of saturated aliphatic or alicyclic hydroxycarboxylic acid with a polyhydric alcohol prepared from a ≥6C alkane, especially ≥6C branched alkane is subjected to catalytic hydrogenolysis in the presence of preferably a copper-chromite catalyst containing barium and/or manganese to afford a saturated aliphatic or alicyclic polyhydric alcohol (e.g., 1,6-hexanediol). The above-mentioned method provides a high conversion rate for the esterified substance of the polyfunctional carboxylic acid with formation of an extremely small amount of by-products. Thereby, steps for separating and purifying product from the hydrogenolysis solution can be simplified. The resultant product is useful as a raw material for plasticizers, polyester, polyurethanes, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
