abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by using ion exchange type-layer compound as a catalyst and a specific mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbon as an alkylating agent, respectively, in carrying out transmethylating reaction of naphthalene and/or monomethylnaphthalene. n CONSTITUTION: Naphthalene or monomethylnaphthalene or both are brought into contact with a monomolecular aromatic hydrocarbon having ≥4 methyl groups, especially penta- to hexamethylbenzene in the presence of an ion exchange type-layer compound, preferably a layer compound having ionic components which are those ions partially or wholly derived from tri- or polyvalent elements, especially aluminum ion, gallium ion, zirconium ion or indium ion between the layers to selectively afford a β,β-dimethylnaphthalene, especially 2,6- and 2,7-dimethylnaphthalenes useful as a raw material for polyethylene naphthalene in high yield. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio |
