titleOfInvention Substituted biphenylcarboxylic acid and its preparation
abstract NEW MATERIAL: A biphenylcarboxylic acid represented by formula I (wherein R 1 is H or OCH 3 ). n EXAMPLE: 4,4'-Difluorobiphenyl-2-carboxylic acid. n USE: A medicine. A material for the synthesis of 2,7-difluoro-9-fluorenone of formula II useful as a medicine used in the treatment of sequelae following diabetes. n PREPARATION: A 2-methoxybenzoic acid of formula III is reacted with an ethanolamine of formula IV (wherein R 1 and R 3 are each H or a 1-3C alkyl, provided that R 2 ≠R 3 = alkyl) to form an amide of formula V. This is then cyclized to form a novel compound of formula VI. This is reacted with an organometallic reagent of formula VII [wherein M is Li, Zn-Hal (wherein Hal is Cl, Br or I) or the like] to form a novel biphenyl derivative of formula VIII, this is optionally converted into a novel alkyl compound of formula IX (wherein R 4 is a 1-3C alkyl; and X - is a chloride ion, a methyl sulfite ion or the like), and the product is hydrolyzed to obtain a compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
