abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the title composition showing a chiral smectic C phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature and excellent in orientation and rapid response by incorporating a chiral dopant comprising an optically active compound into a liquid crystal composition containing an intermediate-temperature liquid crystal and a specified high-temperature liquid crystal and showing a smectic C phase. n CONSTITUTION: A chiral dopant comprising an optically active compound (e.g. compounds of formula V and VI) is incorporated into a liquid crystal composition which contains an intermediate-temperature liquid crystal [e.g. a compound of formula l (wherein R 1 and R 2 are each 1-18C alkyl)] and a high-temperature liquid crystal containing a compound of formula II [wherein R a and R b are each 1-18C alkyl or alkoxyl; groups of formulas III and IV are each (F- substituted) p-phenylene, provided that at least one of them is p-phenylene] and shows a smectic C phase, thus forming the title composition. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
