abstract PURPOSE: To simply obtain a polyphenylene ether-polycondensate block copolymer by oxidation linking of a polycondensate having a phenolic terminal group and a substd. phenol compd., with the substituents being selected independently of each other, in a specified solvent. n CONSTITUTION: A polycondensate having a phenolic terminal group represented by formula I [wherein R 3 and R 4 represent a 1-6C alkyl or H; R 1 and R 2 represent R 3 or a 7-12C substd. benzyl, provided that R 1 and R 2 do not simultaneously represent H or a tertiary alkyl; R represents a (cyclic) aliph. group, a 20C or lower arom. or benzyl residue; and m and p are 0 or 1, provided that m+p≥1; and X represents O or NH] and a substd. phenol compd. represented by formula II (wherein A represents Cl, Br, I, or H), with the substituents being selected independently of each other, are oxidation-linked to each other in a solvent capable of dissolving at least a part of the polycondensate, thereby to obtain a polyphenylene ether-polycondensate block copolymer of AB type and/or ABA type (wherein A represents polyphenylene ether; and B represents a polycondensate). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
