abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compsn. with excellent rapid response and orientation by incorporating a chiral dopant into a liq. crystal compsn. contg. a high temp.-range liq. crystal and a viscosity-reducing liq. crystal consisting of a specified compd. and exhibiting a smectic C phase. n CONSTITUTION: In preparing the subject compsn. by incorporating a chiral dopant in a liq. crystal compsn. contg. a high temp.-range liq. crystal and a viscosity-reducing liq. crystal and exhibiting a smectic C phase, a compd. of formula I (wherein R a and R b are each a 1 to 18C linear or branched alkyl and at least one of them is a 1 to 18C linear alkyl; formulas II and III are each a formula IV, V, VI or VII and at least one of them is formula IV, and formula V is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group) is incorporated in the viscosity- reducing liq. crystal. The subject compsn. obtd. by said method exhibits excellent orientation and rapid response and is a liq. crystal material which can work over a wide temp. range including room temp.
