| abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition having high orientation and quick response, workable over a wide temperature range including room temperature and useful as a material for a liquid crystal device by adding a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal composition containing a medium-temperature liquid crystal and a specific reduced viscosity liquid crystal. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition exhibiting chiral smectic C phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature is produced by adding (A) a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal composition exhibiting smectic C phase and containing (B) a medium-temperature liquid crystal and (C) a re duced viscosity liquid crystal containing the compound of formula I (R a and R b are 1-18C straight-chain or branched alkyl provided that at least one of R a and R b is 1-18C straight-chain alkyl; the group of formula II is group of formula III, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, etc.).
