titleOfInvention Production of single crystal of neodymium cuprate
abstract PURPOSE: To grow a single crystal of the Nd 2 CuO 4 superconductor having high quality by a floating zone method on a seed crystal by interposing a solvent consisting of Nd 2 O 3 and CuO between a raw material rod consisting of Nd 2 CuO 4 which contains a small ratio of specific different elements and the seed crystal of Nd 2 CuO 4 in contact therewith and heating a solvent to form a floating melt. n CONSTITUTION: Raw material powder formed by mixing the Nd 2 O 3 and CuO in the form of powder at 1:1 and CeO or SrO as a part of the Nd 2 O 3 is molded under pressurization to a round rod shape and the molding is calcined to form the raw material rod consisting of the Nd 2 CuO 4 . The round rod-shaped solvent 3 consisting of the powder mixture composed of 17.9 to 7.1mol% Nd 2 O 3 and 82.1 to 92.9mol% CuO is in succession cut to a disk shape and is fused to the front end of th raw material rod 1. The solvent 3 is heated and melted by the IR rays from a halogen lamp 7 while this rod is kept roated by a revolving shaft 4 and thereafter, the rod is brought into contact with the seed crystal 2 and the solvent 3 is pulled upward under rotation, by which the single crystal of the Nd 2 CuO 4 is grown on the seed crystal 2. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
