abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition having quick response and high orientation and exhibiting chiral smectic C phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature by compounding a specific chiral dopant to a composition containing a medium-temperature range liquid crystal, a specific reduced viscosity liquid crystal and a high-temperature liquid crystal. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition is produced by adding (A) an optically active compound of formula Q 1 *-Z-Q 2 * [Q 1 * and Q 2 * are optically active groups different from each other, each optically active group has an asymmetric C atom and at least one of Q 1 * and Q 2 * has a structure containing the asymmetric C atom directly bonded to O, S, etc.; Z is central skeleton part of liquid crystal molecule of formula III (the groups of formula IV to formula IV are group of formula VII, formula VIII, etc.; Y 1 and Y 2 are single bond, COO, etc.; m is 0 or 1)] as a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal composition exhibiting smectic C phase and containing (B) a medium temperature range liquid crystal, (C) a reduced viscosity liquid crystal containing the compound of formula I (R a and R b are 1-18C straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl provided that at least one of R a and R b is 1-18C straight-chain alkyl: the group of formula II is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene) and (D) a high-temperature liquid crystal. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
