abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition having excellent response and orientation and exhibiting chiral smectic C phase over a with temperature range including room temperature by compounding a chiral dopant to a composition composed of a medium-temperature range liquid crystal, a specific reduced viscosity liquid crystal and a high-temperature liquid crystal. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition is produced by adding (A) a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal composition exhibiting smectic C phase and containing (B) a medium-temperature range liquid crystal, (C) a reduced viscosity liquid crystal containing the compound of formula I (R a and R b are 1-8C straight-chain or branched alkyl provided that at least one of R a and R b is 1-18C straight chain alkyl] the group of formula II is group of formula III, trans-1,4- cyclohexylene, etc.) and (D) a high-temperature liquid crystal. The content of the compound of formula I in the component C is preferably ≥50wt.%.
