titleOfInvention | Ferroelectric liquid crystal composition |
abstract | PURPOSE: To improve high speed response and orientation characteristics by compounding a liq. crystal compsn. contg. a liq. crystal of medium temp. range, a specified viscosity-reducing liq. crystal and a high temp. liq. crystal and exhibiting a smectic C phase with a chiral dopant. n CONSTITUTION: A liq. crystal compsn. exhibiting a smectic C phase (SC phase) is obtd. by compounding a liq. crystal of medium temp. range (i) which is optically-inactive, has a biring structure and an SC phase, a viscosity-reducing liq. crystal (ii) contg. a compd. of formula I (wherein R a and R b are each a 1-18C linear or branched alkyl and at least one of them is a linear alkyl; formulas II and III are each a formula IV-VII and at least one is formula IV; formula V is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene) and a high temp. liq. crystal (iii) which consists of a tri- or tetra-ring structure and is an optically-inactive compd. This compsn. is compounded with a chiral dopant of formula VIII (wherein Q 1 * and Q 1 * are optically-active groups which are different each other and each has one or more asymmetric carbons and one of them has a structure wherein the asymmetric carbon directly bonds to O, S, N etc.,; Z is a central skeleton part of a liq. crystal molecule of formula IX; formulas X-XII are formulas IV-V etc.; Y 1 and Y 2 are each a single bond, -COOetc.,; m is 0-1). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio |
