abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition exhibiting quick responsibility, excellent orienting ability and chiral smectic C-phase in a wide temperature range containing room temperature by mixing chiral dopant into a composition containing middle-temperature region liquid crystal, specific viscosity-reducing liquid crystal and high-temperature liquid crystal. n CONSTITUTION: (D) Chiral dopant is mixed into a liquid crystalline composition composed of (A) middle-temperature region liquid crystal, (B) viscosity-reducing liquid crystal containing a compound expressed by formula I (R a and R b are 1-18C alkyl with a proviso that at least one of the Ra and Rb is 1-18C linear alkyl; formula II is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; formula III is formula IV or formula V, etc.) and (C) high-temperature liquid crystal and exhibiting smectic C-phase to afford the aimed composition.
