abstract PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain the subject compounds useful as an interme diate, etc., for dyes, etc., without any problems in waste water control, etc., by converting 5-nitro-1,4,4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinones in the presence of a basic compound and then electrolytically reducing the resultant product in the presence of a basic compound. n CONSTITUTION: 5-Nitro-1,4,4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinones expressed by formula I (R 1 and R 2 are mutually independent and H, 1 to 4C alkyl or halogen) are converted into 1-hydroxylaminathraquinones expressed by formula II in the presence of a basic compound (especially hydroxide, carbonate, etc., of groups Ia, Ib, IIa and IIb metals of the periodic table) and the resultant products are then subjected to electrolytic reduction in the presence of a basic compound, preferably reductive reaction in an electrolytic cell composed of an anode and a cathode compartments preferably provided with a diaphragm in the center to afford compounds expressed by formula III. Furthermore, the compound expressed by formula I is obtianed by indirectly and electrolytically oxidizing 1-nitronaphthalene and then subjecting the obtained compound and a compound expressed by formula IV to the Diels.Alder reaction. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
