abstract | PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a thin film of a nitrospiropyran compd. by the Langmuir-Blodgett's (LB) technique by allowing a nitrating agent to act directly on a specified photochromic material. n CONSTITUTION: A nitrating agent is allowed to act directly on a photochromic material represented by formula I to form a photochromic material represented by formula II. In the formulae I, II, R is alkyl and each of R 1 and R 2 is ketoalkyl, alkoxy, nitro, halogen or alkanoyloxymethyl. The formed photochromic material is a spiropyran compd. having a nitroindoline ring and enabling the formation of a thin film by the LB technique.
