| abstract | PURPOSE: To provide a method for treating or preventing the dental plaque, gingival or periodontal diseases of the oral cavity by topically applying a monoperoxyphthalate compound and a bis-biguanide compound to the oral surfaces of the teeth or dentures. n CONSTITUTION: This method for treating or preventing the dental plaque, gingival or periodontal disease of the oral cavity comprises topically applying a composition comprising a monoperoxyphthalate compound of formula I (R" is one or more substituents compatible with the peroxy acid functionality of the aromatic ring) or its salt or ester to the oral surfaces of the teeth or dentures of humans or lower animals to reduce the dental plaque, or gingival or periodontal diseases. The compound of formula I and the compound of formula II are preferably contained in amounts of 0.25-5% and 0.01-1%, respectively.
