titleOfInvention | Augment of fetal hemoglobin by treatment with activin and/or inhibin |
abstract | PURPOSE: To ameliorate beta-globin disorders in a mammal by administering an effective dose of active and/or inhibin to inhibit or reverse the switching of fetal gamma-globin to feral deta-globin. n CONSTITUTION: A compound selected from the group consisting of activin, inhibin, an inhibin chain (e.g. inhibin alpha-chain, inhibin beta-chain, preproinhibin alpha-chain), and derivatives and mixtures thereof is administered at an effective dose to increase the amount of feral hemoglobin and ameliorate the clinical symptoms of beta-globin disorders such as sickle cell disease or beta-thalassemias. The sickle cell disease of a mammal is also diagnosed by culturing a biological specimen from the mammal in the presence of an effective amount of the compound and subsequently measuring the decrease in the beta- globin synthesis of the cultured specimen in comparison with a control specimen cultured in the absence of the compound. The activin is a hormone called as an erythrocyte-differentiating factor or a follicle-stimulating hormore-releasing protein. The inhibin is a hormone for inhibiting the secretion of the follicle- stimulating hormone from a pituitary body. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
