titleOfInvention Purification of aqueous glyoxal solution
abstract PURPOSE: To purify an aq. alyoxal solns. contg. org. acids by means of a membrane cell comprising at least two compartments separated by an ion exchange membrane and by passing the soln. through one of the compartments and passing an aq. soln. of a base through a neighboring compartment. n CONSTITUTION: The purification is conducted by passing an aq. crude glyoxal soln. through a compartment K 1 in a dialysis cell or an electrodialysis cell having an arrangement of formula I (wherein M 1 is an anion exchange membrane; each of K 1 and K 2 is a compartment, (m) is 1 to 800) and passing an aq. soln. of a base (e.g. an aq. soln. of an alkali metal carbonate) through a compartment K 2 . The purification can be conducted by passing an aq. crude glyoxal soln. through the compartment K 1 in a electrodialysis cell having an arrangement of formula II (wherein M 2 is a dipolar membrane or a cation exchange membrane), passing an aq. base through the compartment K 2 and passing an aq. electrolyte through a compartment K 3 . A purified soln. in which an acid value is highly conc. to <1 can be obtd. from an aq. crude soln. having the acid value of 5 to 200 according to the above method. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
