abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a polycarbonate improved in melt strength and shear strength by reacting a linear arom. polycarbonate with a specific polyhydric phenol in the presence of a carbonate-equilibrating catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: A linear arom. polycarbonate obtd. by the interfacial polymn. of a dihydroxyarom. compd. and phosgene and having a number average mol.wt. of 10,000-30,000 and 0.1-2.0 mol of a polyhydric phenol having at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule [e.g. 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane] are subjected to melt condensation in the presence of 0.01-0.1 mol of a carbonate- equilibrating catalyst (e.g. tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate) at 200-350°C for 1-30 min to give a branched thermoplastic polycarbonate having a melt index ratio of 2 or higher, a complex viscosity ratio of 3.0 or higher, a number average mol.wt. of 5,000-20,000, an intrinsic viscosity (25°C, in chloroform) of 0.50-0.55, and a melt viscosity of 4,000-15,000 cm.s. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
