PURPOSE: To uniformly coat a granular medium with a protective material by coating the grain with an anhydrous soln. of an organometal in a water- immiscible solvent, vaporizing the solvent and then heating the remainder to convert the organometallic compd. into the metallic oxide. n CONSTITUTION: An organometallic compd. such as aluminum isopropoxide is dissolved in a solvent substantially immiscible with water to prepare the anhydrous soln. A grain of ceramic, etc., is coated with the soln. The coated grains are separated from one another in the soln., and the solvent is vaporized by atomizing the soln., for example. The coated grain is then heated to 250-500°C to convert the coating organometallic compd. into the metallic oxide. Further, the metallic oxide is heated, if necessary, in the presence of carbon and nitrogen to convert the coating into the metallic nitride. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
