titleOfInvention 2,5-disubstituted heterocyclic compound and liquid-crystalline phase
abstract NEW MATERIAL: A compd. of formula I (wherein R 1 and R 2 are each 1-12C alkyl, alkenyl, or oxyalkyl; L 1 and L 2 are each H or F; Y is O, COO, OCO, or a single bond; m is 1 or 2; Z is H, F, OH, or 1-5C alkyl; and Q is O or OCO provided when Z is F or OH, then Q is a single bond). n EXAMPLE: Optically active 2-p-octyloxyphenyl-5-(3-fluorononyl)pyridine. n USE: As a component of a chirally tilted smectic liq.-crystalline phase. This compd. is colorless in the pure state, has a favorable optical anisotropy value and good resistances to heat and light, and is used as a dielectric for an electro-optic display element. n PROCESS: A compd. of formula II, etc., is reacted pref. with an optically active epoxide of formula III (wherein n is 0-12) under a basic condition to give a compd. of formula I wherein Z is OH and Q is a single bond. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
