abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain 1-nitroanthraquinone of high purity, important as a dye intermediate in a high yield by subjecting 1-nitro-tetrahydroanthraquinone obtained by reacting 5-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone with butadiene in a two-stage oxidation reaction. n CONSTITUTION: 1-nitro-5,8,11,12-tetrahydroanthraquinone obtained by reacting 5-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone with butadiene is oxidized to 1-nitro-5,8- dihydroanthraquinone at a temp. of 5-100°C by using oxygen, an inorg. peroxide compd. (e.g.; perborate, persulfate) or metal oxide (suitably, manganese dioxide) as an oxidizing agent and this intermediate is oxidized at temp. slightly higher than the above mentioned reaction temp., pref., at a temp. of 20-160°C by using one of the above mentioned oxidizing agents to obtain 1-nitroanthraquinone.
