PURPOSE: To obtain an alkaloid useful for treating asthma, bronchitis, shigellosis, etc., by grinding a plant material, slurring it in a mixture of water, a water- immiscible nonpolar solvent and the like at a specific pH to dissolve the alkaloid in the solvent and making pH acidic. n CONSTITUTION: A plant material (pref., Sanguinaria canadensis, Macleya cordata, Macleaya microcarpa, Corydalis sevctvzil, Corydalis ledebounl, Argemone mexicana, Chelidonium majus) is ground. This is slurried in a mixture of water, a water-immiscible nonpolar solvent (pref., methylene chloride, chloroform and dichloroethane) and a co-sofvent at pH of 8.5 to dissolve an alkaloid in the solvent. Then, pH of the soln. is lowered with an acid to extract the alkaloid in water and the alkaloid is precipitated by adding a mineral acid (salt) and collected. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO |
