titleOfInvention Production of 5-cyanovaleric acid and its ester
abstract PURPOSE: To produce 5-cyanovaleric acid and its esters with high a selectivity in a high yield, by reacting CO with pentenitriles under heating and pressure in a co-solvent consisting of a compd. such as water or alcohols and alkylnitrile in the presence of a Co-containing carbonilation catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: A co-solvent of a compound represented by formula R'OH (R' is H or 1-6C alkyl) (e.g.; water, methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol) and at least a co-solvent selected from among 1-6C alkylnitriles (e.g.; butyronitrile, propionitrile) are used to react pentenitrile and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt-containing carbonyl catalyst at a temp. of about 130-220°C under a pressure of about 1,500-8,000 psig to obtain 5-cyanovaleric acid represented by the formula (wherein R is H or a 1-6C alkyl) and its esters. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
