abstract PURPOSE: To provide the subject cosmetic having both a creamy touch and a strong water resistance when used under wet conditions, a rich refreshing touch and high safety containing a powder having a specific average particle size and surface-modified with organic hydroxyl groups and/or polyoxyalkylene groups. n CONSTITUTION: A powder surface-modified with organic hydroxyl groups and/or polyoxyalkylene groups and having an average particle size of 0.01-50μm is added to a solid powder cosmetic in an amount of 0.1-50wt.%, preferably 0.5-30wt.%, based on the whole amount of the solid powder cosmetic. The surface-modified powder acts as an emulsifier when the particle sizes of the powder are small (e.g. 0.01-1μm) and also as a water-retaining agent when the particle sizes are large (e.g. 1-50μm). The method for the surface modification includes a method in which the powder is coated with a silicone polymer having Si-H groups and the Si-H groups are addition-reacted with an unsaturated compound having the above-mentioned functional groups and a method in which the powder is coated with a silane coupler having the above-mentioned functional groups. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
