abstract PURPOSE: To improve the viscosity reforming characteristic without containing a halogen by including a condensation product of a specified carboxylic acid material, an N-hydroxyarylamine compound, an aldehyde reactant, and an amine reactant. n CONSTITUTION: The subject additive which is a condensation product is produced by reacting (a) an ethylene-α-olefin polymer substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid material in which a 4-10C mono-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid producing component or a 3-10C mono-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid producing component is substituted, having a number average molecular weight of 300-10000 and a VR value of less than 4.1, wherein 30% or more of the polymer chain has terminal ethenylidene unsaturation, and consisting of a monomer unit derived from ethylene and a compound of the formula (R 1 is a 1-18C alkyl), (b) an N-hydroxyarylamine compound, (c) an aldehyde reactant, and (d) an amine reactant.
