titleOfInvention Optically active heterocyclic compound, production thereof, liquid crystal composition containing the same as active ingredient and liquid crystal element using the same
abstract NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by formula I [R 1 is 8-20C alkyl; R 2 is (halogen-substituted) 1-20C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl; X is -COO- or -OCO-; Y is -O- or X; Ar is formula II, III, IV, etc.; l is 1 or 2; q is 0-5; m and s are 0 or 1; mark * indicates asymmetric carbon atom). n EXAMPLE: 4-(5-Decyloxy-2-pyrimidyl)phenyl (+)-4-(1-hexyloxyethyl)benzoate. n USE: A ferroelectric liquid crystal compound, useful as a blending ingredient for liquid crystal compositions, used as a liquid crystal element, having excellent spontaneous polarizability, responsive at a high speed and capable of assuming liquid crystallinity within a lower temperature range. n PREPARATION: Alcohols expressed by formula V are reacted with optically active carboxylic acids expressed by formula VI (R' is OH or halogen) in the presence of condensing agent and an organic base, such as 4-pyrrolidinopyridine, preferably in a solvent to afford the compound expressed by formula I (X is -OCO-). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO&Japio
